| MANAUS, Brazil – Prison wardens in the Brazilian Amazon were embarrassed by photos posted to Facebook showing prisoners drinking beer. The inmates of the Puraquequara Prison in the Amazonian capital, Manaus, were shown enjoying several perks, including tobacco, beer and young women, apparently prostitutes.
The inmates, mostly convicted of drug trafficking, were housed in a secure cell block reserved for the most dangerous prisoners. The photos show at least seven inmates holding a barbecue within the housing unit of the prison, with kegs of Heineken beer, boom-boxes, flat-screen television and young women. The Facebook profile belonged to Alessandro Barbosa, an inmate convicted of drug trafficking.
The Public Safety Department of the state of Amazonas suspended the warden, Oton Bittar, in order to facilitate the investigation. An inquiry was opened in order to discover how the inmates managed to post the photos on the social network, since, according to the department, the unit has a blocking system for cellular signals. The investigation will also consider the possible connivance of prison guards, “which may lead to the shutdown of the unit.”
